Mumbai's monsoon isn't gentle rainfall — it's wind-driven water hitting windows and doors horizontally for weeks at a stretch, and it has a way of finding exactly the weak point in a home's sealing that stayed hidden all through the dry months.
The first thing to check is gasket condition. Rubber EPDM seals around a sash do the actual work of keeping wind-driven rain out, and they're also the component that wears out — typically over eight to ten years depending on sun exposure. A gasket that's cracked, hardened, or compressed flat won't seal properly no matter how well the frame itself was installed.
The second is drainage. Aluminium window sills are designed with weep holes and drainage channels to shed water that gets past the outer seal — but those channels only work if they're clear. Dust and debris blocking a drainage slot is one of the most common causes of water pooling on a sill that's otherwise sealing fine, and it's a five-minute check before the season starts.
If a window or door has never been fully weather-tested — a new installation, or one where you're not confident about the seal — this is the season that will tell you. A properly sealed aluminium system with intact gaskets and clear drainage should handle a Mumbai monsoon without a drop getting past the frame; if it doesn't, that's a sealing problem worth fixing before the next heavy week of rain, not after.
